Pride City Stripes

November 10, 2018

This was my top for the Pride round at Fabric Anthropology.  When I got sent the fabric I was a little concerned by how “colorful” it was.  If you haven’t noticed…I tend to wear a lot of neutral colors…and red.

So…I thought about what kind of design I wanted to make that would still be me.  This fabric is bamboo lycra, so it has a nice drape.

Fabric Anthropology – Pride Round – November 10-24

I ended up making an “are you pregnant or not?” shirt.  Yes, gathers around the mid-section can be troublesome, but I thought if it hit in the right spot on my hip it wouldn’t be too bad.

I do love how flowy it is, so hopefully it still works.  I decided that wearing a fitted skirt or slim legged pant would be best to wear with it.

Detail pictures of the top

I used the Wardrobe Builder top as a base, and cut that up and redrafted several pieces. Basically, the bodice top, back and sleeve top/length are the only thing that is the same.  I drafted a new neckline, made the arms have a gather at a cuff I drafted.  Drafted the ruffle and gave it a different hemline.  I also fully enclosed the ruffle in a lining for the sleeve and bodice.

Here are the pattern pieces (you can tell I was indecisive about the front curve 😉 ):

Here is the sleeve:

I am pretty proud of all the stripe match (as much as you can match an uneven stripe).  It even matches from the arm to the body!

The back didn’t match across quite as well, though.

The one thing I am not happy with is the waviness on the front with the ruffle.  I added the ruffle in two steps, but should have just put it on in one step between the lining and the front.

In doing the neckline, I made sure to attach clear elastic while I was putting it together.  To get the tight “V” at the bottom, I needed to straight stitch that area, clip it, and then I serged the rest of it together with the clear elastic.

Even though this is fairly bright and colorful for me, I do really love how it turned out.

The round is open from November  10 – 24 at:

Fabric Anthropology (US)

Thread Therapy Fabric (AU)

Witzend Fabric (CN)

There are a lot of lovely prints in this round, and there is a Be Proud Charity Auction Event with the proceeds from items being auctioned, minus PayPal fees and shipping fees, are donated directly to Point of Pride and the Trevor Project.  If you are interested, the auction opens up November 16 – November 18.  The scarf I am wearing above will be one of the items in the auction. 🙂
