Week 19: Sew a bag

May 28, 2025

Luckily this was an easy theme to follow. I wanted to make a backpack to bring to the renaissance festival that looked renaissance festival-y. We ended up travelling to Texas to visit friends and go to the Scarborough Faire. I had several things to make.

I used some deerskin leather that we found at my Grandma’s house after her death. There are several hides and I am planning on making some bags for my mom and aunt out of it, too. There are some imperfections and stains on most of the hides, so I made this knowing I would have some marks on it. I ended up getting a few oil spots during making it and am just resigned that it is going to have a “lived in character”.

I used a brown lambskin for the accents, and a denim in one of my fabric designs on the inside. I had it leftover from my laptop bag I made a few years ago. I didn’t have to buy anything for this, as I have bought so much hardware previously. So much. It’s like I’m hoarding for my future retirement and the TIME I will have sew. Hopefully, it is not theoretical “time”.

It needed the waterbottle pockets on the side. It was going to be hot in Texas at the end of May. I added straps to hold them in more, if needed. The inside has a pocket and a pocket on the front. I used up all the denim fabric I had left, so YAY for using leftovers.

The shoulder straps are two layers of strap ribbon. It isn’t webbing, but more ribbon/fabric like, so they are pretty soft. I needed two layers for them.

I had to do some hand-stitching, but used my Consew for most of the leather sewing.

Details:

Braided leather for the straps and back hand strap.

On the front, graduated rings and buckle to make it adjustable.

Bottom brown leather to keep it from getting too dirty.

Front pocket under the flap.

Adjustable side pockets.

Inside pocket with fun tag.

I bought a bunch of fun tags from Kylie and the Machine. They definitely meet my need for spicy sarcasm in my sewing. 😀

I love to hear comments! Sometimes comments hit my spam, so be patient. I will find it! xoxo
