A gift and some holiday readiness

November 16, 2010

Anya was invited to a birthday party last Friday and I decided to make the little girl a dress.  As a general rule, I do not do this.  I just don’t know how it will be received and if it will fit and if the parent will think, “ewwww…homemade clothes are so 1950’s!”  Anya picked out the fabrics for this dress, and lo and behold…it was a Hello Kitty party!  The gift seemed to be received well, though it might be a little bit big.  At least if they didn’t like it, they had manners enough not to show it.

Then I got the kids’ outfits/jammies done for the Christmas card picture.  You can ponder how I will utilize these garments until the big card reveal.

Kai’s was just a simple jammie pattern.  I added the cuffs and did the collar differently than what they wanted, but otherwise I did use the pattern.  The fabric is a nice soft green flannel, accented with a cotton woven Looney Tunes Christmas fabric.

Anya’s was a 1980’s era nightgown pattern.  I think we could fit 3 of her in this blousey nightgown, but the pattern did show it to be volumuous.  I did the front differently than the pattern called for.  It was supposed to have a fake button front and then button on the back.  What is the point of that??  I swear some of the pattern designers have never actually had children.  She might not be able to button the back by herself, and since the kids can handle dressing themselves I actually prefer them to do so.

I made the front button, added some other lacy goodness and button embellishments.  Overall, I’m pretty happy with this concoction even though the fit is less than stellar.

Then I finally got the embroidery done on my coffee cozy.  This is one of those things that you just have to plan to sit down for a few hours and work on it.  I think I have a good two or three hours into the embroidery.  It’s not a speedy thing to accomplish, that is for certain.  I was planning on making a design before starting it, but I didn’t get that done and just made it up as I went along.  Now I just need some coffee to put the cozy around!

My plan for this week is to get going on those chair folder pockets.  They won’t be done in time for the conference with the teacher this week, but at least I will be able to say they are in process.  Can you tell I am finding LOTS of other things to do than work on them?? Yeah, it’s not my favorite thing to do.  It will be helpful for the teacher and she can use them for years, so I will get them done soon.  I’m thinking she will get them by the week after Thanksgiving.  That is my goal!

  1. I can’t wait to see your card. Those PJs are just adorable. They lool extra comfy too, which is a definite plus. I love your embroidery on the coffee cozy. You are way more patient than I am. I always find a million other things to do when I am not wanting to tackle a project. At least you are being productive though.

  2. Oh you aer cracking me up over those chair pockets!!!! I know JUST how you feel!!!!!!!! Procrastination is my MIDDLE NAME!!!!! hahahahahahahah
As to your other projects, I particularly like Kai’s pjs with the multi coloured buttons down the front. Snappy! And yet, cuddly looking!
I know what you mean about the time involved in the coffee cosy too. I have some freestyle embroidery on a baby blanket; I started it when I was in labour with the Baby Angel…..ooooooo about 15 and a half years ago!!!! I guess I will finish it for HER babies 🙂

  3. Tell Anya her fabric choice is perfect! Hello Kitty is a favorite of mine too and I am so not much of a cat person. 😉 Her outfit turned out super cute.

  4. Stacy – I made it back to the world of blogging after . . . I don’t know what happened. It is so nice to see your blog still going and still so fun. I absolutely LOVE the green pajamas you made your kids and the christmas card. how fun. That little nightgown is about the cutest things I’ve ever seen!!! Good job 🙂
