Ice stripes

March 21, 2018

This is a quick turnaround strike-off sample that I was selected to sew up from a seamstress call at Threaded Candy CustomsThese stripes are supposed to go with a Halo gamer print, but these are also great for the summer-at-the-coast vibe.

I decided to sew them up into a summer dress.

I really, really want the snow to be gone and for summer to return.  It has been a long and stressful winter.

The base of this dress is the Wardrobe by Me Builder T-shirt.  I used a size 14, so it would be looser on me, but I still angled it out a bit when cutting since I didn’t want it to be too tight.  I traced the pattern and cut it up.  I took a little bit out of the mid-back as it tends to pool a little there.  This also allowed me to do some chevron cutting on the back piece.

Side note: The chevrons were supposed to match up color-wise.  I messed up on one side.  Cutting chevrons doesn’t give you a lot of wiggle room with the fabric, so you really have to pay attention. Which I thought I had.  Guess not.

I made lines on the pattern pieces and marked where the color lines were so that they all matched up.  Theoretically.

In constructing it:

  1. Sewed the front pieces to the V
  2. Sewed the bottom back pieces together (basting first before serging to make sure the stripes matched)
  3. Sewed the side seams together (baste, serge)
  4. Added binding to the arm area
  5. Sewed the back top pieces to the back bottom
  6. Connected the shoulders, sandwiching the front shoulder between the back two pieces.
  7. Sewed binding to the neckline
  8. Sewed together the bottom pieces in one continuous piece.  This is where I got creative in using up what I had left of the fabric.

I found a picture on Pinterest that was the inspiration for the bottom.  I made it wrap around added layers and then cut some of the layers until I got a look I wanted.

The blue is a bamboo lycra, so this is one comfy dress!

This round is open until March 31st.  The base here is double brushed poly, but it is also offered in cotton lycra, cotton woven, swim, boardshort and canvas.

    1. Thank you! Glad the mismatching looks intentional. I was bummed when I saw what I did, but I do like how it looks. 🙂
