S.W.A.P.

S.W.A.P. = sewing with a plan for those not into the online sewing terminology.  Basically, you try to sew a coordinating group of items.  I tried to make some coordinating outfits for our trip to Vegas so I didn’t need to buy anything.  Ha!  Like that worked!  I did use some of the items I made, though.

I decided to do a mostly black/white theme so everything would pretty much coordinate and I could keep the clothes packing down to a minimum. (FYI…didn’t happen) My high heels take up a little bit of room.  Did you see my black/white bag?  That was my favorite piece.  I also wore my black/white pinstriped skirt from this post.

Here is what I got done in time for the trip.

Swimsuit/Tankini – this is the most flattering style for my body and non-existent derriere.  I really don’t care if I get an uneven tan.  It’s not like I’m likely to wear a swimsuit much AT ALL .  I love swimming, but I don’t love putting on a swimsuit.  It looks okay, but I decided not to bring it along and bought a Ralph Lauren one instead.  Eh…now I have a backup.

You didn’t think I would actually model this, did you?

Swim cover up.  Pretty simple, though time consuming.  I just shirred a big black rectangle and did a rolled hem on the edges.  This can also be used as a skirt if needed, which it was.  I wore it on the way home on the plane to ease my sunburn, instead of wearing leggings that would have been torturous.  I love this soft black jersey.  Super comfy!

Short sleeve black shirts – black shirts go with everything.

This shirt is a cross-front shirt, which is based off my tutorial.  I just added some simple sleeves to it.  The fabric is a jersey knit with great drape and some lycra in it.  Very soft and comfy to wear.  This shirt will get lots of use.

I am showing this with a skirt I made when Anya was a few months old.  We had a family wedding we were going to and it was going to be a HOT day with the reception outside at a golf club.  I had a strapless top on for easy access for nursing.  I remember I got whistled at in the parking lot when I went to the car to get more diapers.  That was a nice ego boost LOL!

Sleeveless with the same knit.  I was going to do a draped cowl neckline on it, but that didn’t work.  I may need an actual pattern for that.  Instead, I cut this neckline, then placed a bunch of scrap fabric that was sitting on the cutting table on the neckline.  I made it lined, so I sewed the scraps to the neckline in between the layers and VOILA!  I like how it turned out.  I didn’t hem it either.  Just keeping it a bit unfinished looking.  This is a pretty thin fabric, so I really needed to line it.  Wish black photographed better, since it is hard to see the neckline.

I had many more grand plans that just did not get done.  Oh well, I got some things done and I wear them often. 🙂

I’ve got a few more things I need to photograph, yet.  Most importantly, I had to make Anya a new dress for her birthday, which is tomorrow.  Always something to keep me busy!

  1. You never cease to amaze me. I have lots of projects in my mind, but I am having problems with the execution. I love the shirred skirt. It looks super comfortable and versatile. Both tops turned out really well too. You are brave to attempt a bathing suit.

  2. Ditto to the above comment and add the lack of time factor. I have my new machine and new sewing cabinet staring at me…rolls and boxes of material…creativity and ideas to spare BUT ………no time.I am particularly interested in the tankini as this is ALL I wear. My current one is 6 years old and on its last legs. You can’t always buy them so it would be great to have a pattern….
