Creativity | Sewing | Sewing for the boy | Sewing for the girl

Stylin’ little man

September 21, 2010

Sewing for boys is difficult.  It isn’t difficult in the way of execution.  Pants and t-shirts are pretty much their garb, and that isn’t all that difficult to sew.  It is difficult in creating something with a little extra design goodness that doesn’t go over the top.  I’m not very good at subtle.

When I was making his pants (faux fly – elastic waist) this time, I just wanted to add a little bit of flourish instead of like last time.  Though I love those pants I made last time, I figured something a bit less outlandish would be better for this go around.  My contribution to creativity for these pants are the pocket designs that I made.  Fancy pockets are all the rage these days.

I drew the designs on freezer paper and cut them out.  Then I ironed them onto the pocket prior to construction, and sewed along the outline.  You can reuse the freezer paper, so I only needed to draw the design once.  On the khaki pair I used the design afterwards and painted it with black metallic fabric paint when it was all constructed.

 Silliness…

The iron-on transfer for this shirt was a PAIN.  I followed the instructions for getting it onto the shirt and it barely adhered in places.  I basically had to pick it off the backing and then iron it really well onto the shirt.  I hope it survives the first washing.   If you see this at Michael’s…I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it.

Other than that…COOL DRAGON SHIRT.  Yes, we love our dragons around here.  This will look totally wicked with his dragon pants.  He be stylin’. 😉

Now we have the Pirate Shirt, as the Boy calls it.  Not quite the Jolly Roger, but close enough for him.  All he needs is his cutlass and pirate eye patch when he’s wearing it.

A few more plainish shirts, but oh so comfy.  The fabric on these shirts are super soft knits.

The requisite Green Bay Packer apparel.  Go Pack!!

Here’s a few pictures of the Girl wearing the clothes I didn’t have her model for me last week.  She wore her new clothes to school everyday last week, so apparently she likes them. 😉

Next on the agenda?  I want to make a few more pants for the Boy and then I want to sew a few things for me.  Seeing as how I have a few photo shoots booked for the fall, I need to get them done before I will be editing pictures for the next month.  No rest for the wicked…or habitually over-scheduled. 😉

  1. I love the added detail on the pockets. Very hip. Those t-shirts do look super comfy. He is going to be stylin’ for sure. Anya’s outfits look even cuter on. You rock!!

  2. em was peeking over my shoulder when i was reading this post this morning and she was quiet through all of the boy stuff (no offense though – it all looks great!) and when i got to anya’s pics she perked right up and said, “oh mama. that dress is AWWWWESOME!” (yes…all drawn out like a teenager awwwesome!) she wanted me to tell you that she loves the stripey leggings and has requested a striped, ruffly pink and purple dress please. ahem. 🙂
