The reluctant scarecrow

April 23, 2012

Anya’s part in the 1st Grade Performance is a speaking part as a scarecrow. When she came home with her assignment, she was not a happy camper.

To put it lightly.

You could say she was mad!

I told her I would make her a “cute” scarecrow outfit.

She was STILL mad.

Then I told her, “You can’t always get what you want, and you just need to make the best of the situation. Either you stop being so upset at being a scarecrow and I’ll make you a cute outfit, OR you can still be mad and I won’t put in the effort.”

She…reluctantly…agreed that she would have a better attitude so she could get a “cute” outfit.

This is what the instructions said about her costume:

old blue overalls or jeans and flannel shirt, yelow paper sticking out of sleeves and legs, floppy hat, etc.

My idea was to make her a little denim skirt, with straw colored leggings, a plaid shirt and buy a cheap straw hat and glue some matching silk flowers on it.  I got the hat at a Party America store for $5, and that is the only thing I had to buy.  I had the denim, the tan knit, and the plaid fabric already.  I wanted to keep this low cost.

Here is the outfit that she will wear on Thursday night:

The little denim skirt will definitely be too short to not wear capris or leggings underneath it.  It is a stretchy denim, so it should be pretty comfy.  I added a little horse appliqué that I had in my stash.  I think I got it from her Aunt Susie.

The peasant top is another self-drafted top, but I don’t really like the fit on it.  I will have to tweak it if I used it again.  It doesn’t go up high enough at the shoulder.  The little wrist fringe is supposed to emulate straw coming out of her shirt.

The silk flowers are from a vast stash of silk flowers I have in a bin in the garage.  I used to make silk flower arrangements all the time, and these are my leftovers.  It is handy to have tried so many crafts in the past.  You can use your leftovers for other things!  Armed with a bunch of flowers that I took off the stems and a glue gun, I went to town and flowered-up the hat.

I am sure I will have pictures to show of her all gussied up later in the week! 🙂

And here she is all gussied up!
