Two leather hip bags for gifts

January 16, 2019

Before Christmas I had cut out several projects out of leather of my hip bag pattern.  I didn’t really have recipients in mind until I got around to making them up, so these were the last two I sewed up for my aunt and sister…both for their birthdays.

We don’t give Christmas presents to adults anymore, as we all really don’t need much.  We enjoy spending time together around the holidays, and only buy presents for the kids.  HOWEVER, we do still try to give birthday presents (at least us ladies do!), so I gave these presents to my aunt and sister when we saw them at Christmas.

This one was for my sister.  She still has horses, so I found these great barrel racer conchos to put on this nice brown leather bag.

I added a magnet to the front pocket.  When I add the magnet, I make sure to have a lining to the flap.  I glue it all down with a leather cement, so it is nice and flat.

The back is just plain.

I used a nylon webbing for the strap.

The next one was for my aunt.  These are nice in that I can use up smaller pieces of leather for the front pockets and the sides.

The conchos on this one are Celtic in a burnished gold.  I found both conchos on Amazon (of course!).

Again, I lined the flap to have the back of the magnet covered.

When I do the gusset side seam on these purses, I place them with Wondertape.  I really keeps the pieces in place when I am going to sew it up.  Leather can stretch and move, so this helps a great deal.

Now after making six of these bags in December-ish, I think I am ready to finally get a tutorial up on them.  I might need to do another one for pictures, but maybe I can figure out illustrations.  We’ll see!
