Who needs a dog…

March 15, 2011

When you can have minky fabric shedding all over the place?? Oh boy, does this stuff shed when it is cut…but it is so heavenly soft! If I were to own a mink coat, I bet it would feel this soft.  These are definitely fun gifts to make for little babies. These blankets are for two different friends that recently had little girls. One is a few months late and one is almost on time!

One couple was actually at our SuperBowl party and she was scheduled to be induced that next week. As they were walking out the door, I gave her the first MeiTai I had made. It was just sitting gathering dust, and I’m not a big one for keeping everything I have ever, ever made just for the sake of keeping them. She was very pleased to have it, too.

I can tell that these parents have more of a modern ascetic when it comes to what they prefer. I chose this flannel fabric line to go more towards those tastes. I almost picked out a black minky to match it, but I thought that was a bit much for little baby girls.  It would have looked very luxe, though.

How to:  These blankets use a yard each of flannel fabric and minky fabric.  I square off the flannel, and then cut the minky to the same size (minky usually runs wider).  I use satin binding tape that I purchase.  It usually takes up nearly one package.  I place the binding right up to the edges of the fabric and sew it all the way to the corners.  I clip the threads, miter the corner and start a new line.  I usually go in a good 1/4″ and then sew another decorative stitch at the end of the binding when everything is attached.  I also sew rickrack along the edge of the unfinished piece of binding.  I heat seal the edges first.

Here are the cards I made to go along with the blankets.  Using up those scrapbooking supplies!

Then here is some knitting that I didn’t do.  My aunt Margie sent us some hats that she had been knitting this winter.  She made some flowers and leaves and spiraly thingies along with to attach.  Anya wanted all of them on, of course.   Pretty cute!

  1. You make the best blankets!!! They always looks so lush and cozy. Anya looks adorable in her new hat. Love all those flowers.

  2. Another cornucopia of craft! I particularly like what you have done attaching the flowers etc to the hat. Did you have a photo to guide you or did you just use your own huge well of creativity?
