A little black knit jacket with lots of mistakes

June 21, 2019

I wanted to make a heavy knit black jacket to wear to work, and so I decided to draft something. I ended up drafting it and cutting it out before I started my new job, but didn’t quite get it sewed up. I used a 4 way heavy ponte like knit, and used a princess seam block I made several years back as a base.

Problems I encountered:

  • I was going for a flare hem, and just made the whole thing too wide. I needed to take out several inches on each side.
  • I front and back sides did not match up, so I had to take about 1.5 inches off the back hem.
  • I put the collar on backwards, so the lining black ponte is on the outside.
  • The shoulder area on the front has too much fabric so it doesn’t lay right.

I think the front zip and facing turned out pretty well. Next time I would do the back facing different, though.

Soooo many issues. I may just scrap that entire pattern, since it won’t work to make it over.

I mostly like how it turned out, so that is good at least. I’m sure I will wear it a ton…it is a good layering piece. I am wearing it here with a top I made at some point this winter, and the new cream pants I made a few weeks ago. A pretty comfy office outfit.
