Striped summer romper

July 1, 2018

I have to admit…I’ve been in a bit of a sewing slump lately.  This is mostly due to the fact that it is super busy with sports during June, and I don’t have much time to sew.  I like to have larger tracts of time to be creative, and that just hasn’t been happening lately.

I still have strikes to sew, though, so that makes me get things done.  This fabric is a strike-off that I loved, but was failing in producing some inspiration.  I wasn’t sure the girl loved it or not, but she mentioned she wanted some short and long rompers.  Voila!  Inspiration!  I told her I could make it with this stripe and she agreed.

Rise up Pre-order at Fabric Anthropology

The base of the fabric here is bamboo lycra, which has a weight of 250 gsm.  It still drapes nicely, but it has more body to it than something like a 170 gsm.  I used the top base from this shirt that I drafted earlier this month.  I figured out where her natural waist landed and then added another 2″.  There is a split between the shorts and the top, mostly due to the top needing to be on the fold and the shorts unable to be on the fold.  I added a band/casing there for the tie.

There is elastic in the casing, in addition to the cording.  The band was 2″ wide with the seam allowances.  The shorts I drafted to make sure the rise was sufficient and then added a 4″ inseam.

The bottoms have side seam pockets.  I attached the pockets along the band, as well.  The solid blue is bamboo lycra, but a lower weight.  It is a bit drapey.  I wanted a little more added stability instead of having a free floating pocket.

I think it turned out pretty well!  The thing with rompers is that you need to be able to successfully get them off to go to the bathroom.  I had to make sure the opening for the head was big enough for it to work. I made her attempt it with her red shirt and she was just able to get it on (with some seam popping…yay.).  I made the head hole a little bit bigger to accommodate the additional space needed.  I also didn’t top-stitch the neck-hole to make sure I didn’t have to deal with the seam popping.

The prints included in the Rise Up round are quite inspirational and very Girl Power.  This was one of the coordinates (Rally Splosion stripe), which on their own, are pretty cool with the watercolor take on a stripe.  Take a look:

Round closes on July 14  (in theory…Melody tends to extend her rounds. 😉 )
