Vanity sizing

July 2, 2011

I bought this dress the day before, and had to wear it right away.  Yes, I am one of those cut-the-tags-off-and-wear-it-people.  I have kids and too much laundry as it is, and this seemed pretty clean so I wore it. That’s how I roll.

Anyways, this dress is a size 4.  I have a substantial rib cage and am a 34D, so I am quite used to buying size 8 dresses.  I have a size 10 that fits me just fine in my closet.  Usually when I buy a larger size and it is a sheath, I need to take it in on the hips.  I have just gotten used to it, being that is the shape of my skeleton and I there really isn’t much for it.

The vanity sizing in this day and age is just too funny, though.  At least for me.  I have some petite friends that have a very difficult time finding clothes their size.  What used to be a 8 is now a 4, so they are now…what?  Children’s sizes, apparently.

You hear people claim that Marilyn Monroe was a size 12.  Well, she was around 120 lbs at 5′ 5″, so today she would likely be a 6.  She did have Barbie doll measurements with a very thin waist, so who knows.  Her bust and hips were basically the same as my measurements, but we differ by several inches in the waist.

No wonder it is so hard to find clothes that fit in the stores…you just never know what size the clothing companies have made.

Dress – Liz Clairborne (via JC Penny, on clearance and only $15.  Yay!)

Sweater – Express

Shoes – Steve Madden

Earrings – Claire’s

Necklaces – Family Tree (Silpada) and Cross (from my Grandma’s jewelry box after she died)

Hair Day 4 – Leftovers from the last post.  I just took it down out of the plaits, fingercombed it and put a glossing spray on it.

  1. That’s a darling outfit, I love the hot pink!

Plus – I just thrifted a pair of those exact wedges in dark blue. Now I know they are Steve Madden… cool.
