Big sleeves

April 1, 2019

Last week’s prompt for the #52weeksewingchallenge was to sew something with a collar. I looked at Pinterest and was going to draft up something new, but then figured I might as well finish a top I had cut out last year.

This top is The Perfect Tunic from Wardrobe by Me, and I had cut into one of my Spoonflower fabrics. I only ordered a yard of this design in silky faille (it is actually closer to the print file in color), and it was only enough to really cut the body of the pattern out. That is where I was stymied, on top of having to tackle a placket. Plackets are not my favorite.

I ended up finding more of the grey 2-way stretch woven that I used for the placket and collar, and cutting out a sleeve. I cut apart the original sleeve. I kept the upper sleeve, added a couple of pieced strips, and then made the bottom part with godets in between the original sleeve pieces. This was a bit of trial and error. I thought I had the pieces too big and then put them together and they were too small. Ugh! I cut more and it ended up fine. The cuff is a casing with elastic in it.

There was a lot of topstitching, and some were machine stitched, serged and then top-stitched. It took awhile!

The hem, I split at about 7″ up.

I have some white jeans that I think this will look really nice in once it gets warmer. I didn’t want to dig them out yet. These are a pair of knit ankle pants I purchased from CAbi a few years ago.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out, and look forward to wearing it out when the weather is nicer. This should be a nice top for work, too. I need to start thinking about making work-wear again!
